Built and operated from its inception by SURA, the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (also known as Jefferson Lab, or simply JLab) is the premier international research center for detailed studies of the structure of protons and neutrons within the nucleus. Jefferson Science Associates, LLC (JSA), a SURA/PAE Applied Technologies joint venture, is the management and operating contractor of the Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy. SURA is the administrative and tax partner for JSA.
As the majority owner of JSA, SURA provides and facilitates a number of benefits and services to enhance the science mission of the Jefferson Lab.
JSA Initiatives Fund Program
JSA established the Initiatives Fund Program to support projects, initiatives, and activities that further the scientific outreach and promote the science, education and technology missions of Jefferson Lab; and benefit the lab’s extended user community. JSA’s annual investment leverages the science and commitment of others to complement the basic and applied research focus of the lab.
Relations & Outreach Support
SURA helps develop, execute, and support a federal and state relations strategy in support of Jefferson Lab. It monitors budgets that impact the lab, and plans activities with lobbyists to ensure consistency of the lab’s near- and long-term strategic plans. Among these activities are:
- Congressional Update on the 12GeV Project
- Participation in a Joint Nuclear Physics Day on Capitol Hill
- An economic impact study of JLab—January 2011
- An economic impact study on the Proposed Medium Energy Ion Collider
SURA Residence Facility
With nearly 1,300 researchers visiting the lab each year, SURA offers a 42-room guest house at economical rates for short- or longer-term accommodations. The SURA Residence Facility is located within walking distance adjacent to Jefferson Lab.
